Whitby Elite Baseball

Updated Friday July 7, 2017 by Whitby Minor Baseball Association.

What is Elite Baseball?

Teams that participate in Elite Baseball League of Ontario (EBLO) of the Ontario Baseball Association are AAA teams.  All of the teams in the various age divisions of the EBLO are AAA but not all AAA teams are in the EBLO.

The EBLO was established to provide an alternative to other non-OBA leagues that call themselves elite as well.  The main differences between the OBA sanctioned teams and the ‘non-recognized’ teams are the cost and the amount of playing time as a result of smaller rosters compared to a number of the ‘non-recognized’ teams.  Coaching qualifications with the OBA teams is at the highest level and the programs and experience are equal if not better.

Why consider playing for a Whitby Elite team

Whitby is the only true AAA centre in the Eastern Ontario Baseball Association.  It fields AAA teams at all levels of competition and in fact has multiple teams at all levels.

For the 2017 season Whitby is the only EOBA centre with three teams in the OBA Elite leagues.

Whitby has hung 56 banners displaying Provincial Championships or Provincial or National finalists.

Whitby has numerous players that have gone on to play college baseball in the US including a number that have played professionally.  In the last two MLB drafts, 4 former Whitby players were chosen to join those Whitby graduates already with MLB minor teams and we expect more in the coming years.  We have access to those players and others that can provide information on pursuing college opportunities.

What sets Whitby apart from other Elite centres?

Whitby is the only OBA centre in the EOBA with its own training facility (The Strike Zone).  Not only do all of the Rep teams have time dedicated to them in the facility but all players have access to professional instruction from former MLB player and coach Eric Owens who was the Blue Jays assistant hitting coach in 2015 and 2016.  Eric provides private lessons in the Whitby facility.

Presently Whitby has Elite teams at the 18u, 17u, and 15u levels.  For 2018 we plan to have teams at the 18u, 17u, 16u, 15u, and 14u levels.  The 14u team will be new in that presently Minor Bantam players can try out and make an EBLO 15u team but in 2018 the League will allow centres to send Minor Bantam teams to play in the EBLO.

Whitby offers experienced coaching for all of its teams and especially the Elite teams.   All of the Elite team coaching staffs are made up entirely of Provincially Qualified coaches.  These coaches also come with many years of experience as former players and coaches at the highest level of competition.

Where do the EBLO teams play?

The majority of teams in the EBLO are situated in the Greater Toronto Area.

Upcoming Changes in the EBLO

In addition to the inclusion of  Minor Bantam teams in 2018, the goal of the League is to ensure that the participating centres are strong programs offering teams at all of the Elite levels.  In addition the programs have to offer the opportunity for spring training baseball in the southern US.

What does it cost to be on a Whitby Elite team?

In comparison to other ‘non-recognized’ programs charging tens of thousands of dollars, the cost of playing on a Whitby Elite team is relatively inexpensive for the quality of baseball provided and what the Whitby program offers.

Following is an estimated breakdown of costs that one might expect to pay on a Whitby Elite team.  The estimated cost is shown as a per player cost based on 15 players (typically on the 18u and 17u teams) and 13 players (typically on the 16u, 15u, 1nd 14u teams).

*-Players are required to have their own uniforms so any player new to Whitby would need to purchase grey baseball pants and a home and away uniform jersey.

**- Those players participating in the optional spring training trip to the US would also be responsible for the costs of such a tournament (team entry of $1500 / number of players) and their travel.

***- As with all of the games and tournaments, all accommodation and travel costs for the optional US spring training tournament are the responsibility of the players

Teams that participate in the PBLO, CPBL, Fergie Jenkins Showcase League and even other EBLO teams charge significantly higher for their programs.  Whitby strives to continue to provide a high quality program at a portion of the cost compared to these other centres.
