Peewee AAA Chiefs are on the way to the Nationals!!!Updated Tuesday August 8, 2017 by Whitby Minor Baseball Association.
The Peewee AAA Chiefs had an unbelievable weekend in Windsor with a 5-2 record over 4 days to finish second at the Peewee Elimination tournament. The second place finish means that Whitby will represent Ontario as “Team Ontario 2” at the Canadian National 13U Championships which will be held in Repentigny, Quebec from August 24th-27th .
Whitby opened with a 5-1 win over the Mississauga North Tigers on Friday night, then went on to pound the Kitchener Panthers in a 15-0 rout on Saturday afternoon. Saturday evening saw the Chiefs take their first defeat, a tough 2-1 loss to Waterloo.
Sunday was awesome as every game was an elimination game! First up was a very good team from Brampton. Whitby played strong defence behind great pitching to take the game 5-4. Next up was the Windsor Stars. The Chiefs got the bats going in this one, belting 13 hits on their way to an 11-7 victory. Sunday evening saw Whitby play the host Riverside Royals who were coming off two tournament victories and are a very good, classy squad. But, there was just no stopping Whitby on Sunday. The Chiefs would eliminate Riverside with a 5-1 victory and head into Round 7.
On Monday morning there were only 3 teams left. Whitby and Waterloo, who both had 1 loss, and the undefeated North York Blues. The Chiefs received a morning bye because Whitby was the only team that had not yet received one up to that point. North York eliminated Waterloo in the morning game, which guaranteed both Whitby and North York a spot at the National Championships. The only thing left to be decided was who would be “Team Ontario 1” and “Team Ontario 2”. Despite an outstanding pitching performance (complete game, 0 earned runs on 2 hits) and out hitting the Blues, Whitby would finally be eliminated by a score of 2-0.
The coaching staff could not be more proud of this group of boys and how they played this weekend. In addition to the outstanding pitching, there was so much great defence which included several outstanding diving double plays, an inside the park home run, and the big hits just kept on coming. The boys suffered injuries, they were sore, they were burnt, they were tired and at times they were behind, but they never quit. They left it all on the field. They controlled the things they were able to control, and didn’t let the things that they could not control get them down.
Team members are – Garrett Joss, Andrew Lewis, Kayden Chung, Greg Lachance, Aaron Cunningham, Jackson Hutchison, Liam Conway, Lukas Reid, Erik Smith, Griffin Catto, Cody Hagerman and Brett Brannon. Coaches are John Catto, Trong Chung, Drew Conway, Jason Hagerman, and Manager Dave Brannon.
