Minor Bantam EOBA ChampionsUpdated Wednesday August 23, 2017 by Whitby Minor Baseball Association.
On August 18-20th, the Minor Bantam AA Whitby Chiefs travelled to the Ottawa region to compete in the annual EOBA Championship weekend, hosted by Kemptville. Whitby had finished 2nd in the league, their best finish ever, and were excited to prove they could go all the way against their division rivals.
Game one took place late Friday afternoon against a strong Kanata squad. Strong pitching for Whitby, kept Kanata off the board for the first three innings, allowing the Chiefs to jump to a lead that they would not relinquish.
Game two went early Saturday morning and saw a continuation of a friendly rivalry against the big bats and strong pitching of the Clarington Orioles. Some bad hops and well struck balls allowed Clarington to jump to an early 3-1 lead, a lead they would extend to 8-5 going into the bottom of the 7th. Whitby, however, had other plans and were able to score 4 runs and take the walk-off victory.
Next up was a late Saturday afternoon match-up featuring the 1st place Ajax Spartans, a team that consistently plays tough. For the first 3 innings both teams matched each other run for run and pitch for pitch. Some sparkling defense and timely hitting in the late innings allowed Whitby to come out on top and go into the Final Four as the only undefeated team in the tournament.
On Sunday morning, Whitby finally got a chance to matchup against the Pickering Red Sox, a team that has broken Whitby’s hearts a few times. Despite a late inning comeback by Pickering to tie the game, the Chiefs were able to push the winning runs through, to secure the victory.
After four thrilling games, the Final featured a replay of the Saturday afternoon game with the Spartans. With no losses for the Chiefs, as of yet, Ajax needed to beat Whitby twice to claim victory. It was a tired Whitby squad that saw their early 2-0 lead evaporate into a 10-4 deficit going into their final at bats. However, as has been proven already, this team does not know how to quit and came out in the top of the seventh with one goal in mind: win this game. With the uncanny ability to get on base how ever they can, the Chiefs were able to not only tie the game, but push across the go-ahead run before going back out to play the bottom half of the inning. Ajax, being a very resilient team as well, managed to ratchet up the tension by loading the bases with two outs. However, it was not enough, as Whitby was able to secure the final out via a ground ball to short and claim the top spot in the 2017 EOBAs
A team batting average of .425 batting average and 47 runs scored, alongside stellar defense and shut-down pitching demonstrated a complete team effort on the way to the Championship.
